Rediscovering the joy of play, connection and being together

For families facing highly vulnerable circumstances, everyday life is often marked by significant economic challenges and limitations. Comedores Santa María, a community dining hall for children from marginalized urban areas, does extraordinary work by providing food to those who need it most, but this time, together with Fundación Royal Holiday, we wanted to go one step further and nourish the hearts and spirits of 93 children and mothers as well.

The camp at Camohmila became a space for play and learning. In a world where many children spend hours in front of screens at home, this trip gave them the opportunity to connect with nature and with other children. In fact, several of them excitedly shared that during the trip they “learned how to really play”, an experience they rarely get to enjoy because of their daily routines.

Throughout the camp, group activities focused on strengthening teamwork and communication. Team challenges, such as passing balls through tubes, showed both children and adults the importance of coordinating and supporting one another to achieve a common goal.

Without a doubt, the most excited activity was swimming in the pool. For many of the children, it was the first time in their lives they had ever been able to swim, turning every splash and water game into a moment of pure happiness and freedom.

To wrap up the experience, the campfire lit up the night with a warm and special atmosphere. Everyone sang, toasted marshmallows and enjoyed the fire together. After the camp, the children returned home not only with unforgettable memories, but also feeling more social and confident, with the knowledge that play and family connection are important treasures.
